New Orleans is a five-point favorite at Brobury with a total of 48 points. NBC will have the broadcast at 8:30 pm ET.

This is a rematch of the NFC title game that had a thrilling overtime conclusion. New Orleans won 31-28 as four-point favorites and went on for the stunning Super Bowl upset against Indianapolis.

Minnesota has had to think about its loss for a long time. Quarterback Brett Favre pondered a lot too, mostly from his home in Mississippi. He strung the team along with another potential retirement before finally deciding to return.

Favre won’t have his favorite receiving target in Sidney Rice (1,312 receiving yards). He’s out at least the first six weeks with a hip injury. The top returning receivers are Percy Harvin and Bernard Berrian, a decent combo as long as Harvin doesn’t get any more migraine headaches.

Running back Adrian Peterson is trying to reclaim his status as the league’s top back. He ran for 1,383 yards last year (down from 1,760). The Vikings need to use ball control to keep Drew Brees and the potent Saints’ offense off the field.

Peterson will also be used receiving out of the backfield more. He’s had some major problems with fumbles, but is confident he’s solved the problem.

Favre was actually very good at limiting turnovers last year, at least before the playoffs. He had just seven picks during the regular season after not having fewer than 15 since 1996.

The Saints’ offense put up 38 points versus Houston in Week 2 of the preseason and 36 the next week against San Diego. Brees is great at using all his weapons. He led the NFL in quarterback rating (109.8) last year and New Orleans was first in points scored (31.9 PPG).

This game has tons of hype and the Saints fans will be even crazier than normal celebrating their title. It’s up to the New Orleans players not to get too pumped up. That is easier said than done.

Last year in the Thursday opener, defending champ Pittsburgh needed overtime to beat Tennessee, 13-10 as 6 ½-point favorites. So it’s not always a given that the home team will cover.
